August New Story Community Social

The New Story Festivall is not just an annual event, it's a year-round community. Each month we host social events at local pubs and coffee shops around town to provide opportunity for this new community to connect and grow.

While there will be opportunity for announcements and networking, there's no real agenda except to build friendships and share life together. Whether you attended the festival this past march, served as a volunteer, or are just interested in getting involved for the future, all are welcome! This is a place for adventurers, seekers, misfits, and holy mischief makers of all sorts - a place for all those drawn by the vision of a new story for a better world. Come join us!

Beer and Hymns Mardi Gras!

Beer and Hymns Mardi Gras!

This month will be a Mardi Gras theme at Dozen Street bar at 12th & Chicon - which also happens to be right next door to The Original New Orleans Po-Boy and Gumbo Shop. So grab some cajun food beforehand and then come on over for a raucous and rowdy rendition of your favorite hymns (at least two rounds of "When the Saints Go Marching In" guaranteed!)

As always, we will be raising money for good causes here in Austin. In addition to the New Story Festival coming to Huston-Tillotson University next November (www.newstoryfestival.com), we will also be giving to a soon-to-be-determined non-profit organization working there on the east side. The (optional) cover is $10 (cash) at the door or you can pay by card ahead of time on our Eventbrite page. But we don't ever turn anyone away, so come and sing even if you can't afford to give.

This isn't about the beer, of course, it's about the experience, so if alcohol isn't for you, please feel free to order water/soda/etc instead. And please be sure to arrange a safe ride home for yourself if you will be drinking.

And be sure to Like the Austin Beer & Hymns page to stay in the loop on all of our upcoming events!

Theology Pub: What About Hell?

Many people believe that the primary point of Christianity is to save individuals from suffering eternal conscious torment in Hell after they die - an essential and inseparable facet of the Christian faith. And yet many people have no idea that the word Hell is actually nowhere in the Bible. Other Christians, in fact, have argued that popular concepts of Hell are later, monstrous additions to a faith that has little to do with postmortem destinies and nothing at all to do with a vengeful God eager to torment people for all eternity.

What then are we to think about Hell? Come explore the biblical, theological, and cultural history of this concept at our next theology pub. Questions and differing opinions are encouraged and all perspectives are welcome. See you there!
